Russian Studies Pre-Dissertation Grants for PhD Students
Pre-dissertation research grants are available to PhD students for exploration of research sources and general feasibility of a proposed topic. Awards can contribute to the cost of travel, research, and living expenses consistent with the standard of living in the host country. Graduate students in international relations, the humanities, and the social sciences are eligible to apply. Masters students are eligible only if admitted to and scheduled to matriculate in a Yale PhD program. Applications must relate to a potential dissertation.
Russian Studies Dissertation Grants for PhD Students
Awards are available to aid graduate students expecting to be engaged in research in Russia on their doctoral dissertation. Applications will be considered from registered graduate students who have completed, or will complete, all pre-dissertation work before their proposed project timeline.
The proposed dissertation research must be in a discipline related to international relations„ the humanities or the social sciences, must focus on Russia, and students’ research, individual or collaborative with Russian counterparts, must be conducted in Russia.
European Studies Council Grants for Language Study
Grants will be awarded to current graduate students at Yale to support intensive structured training in a European language during the summer.
European Studies Council Graduate Fellows Conference Travel Award
European Studies Council’s Fall Semester/Winter/Spring Break Travel Awards are available to members of the ESC Graduate Fellows network to help defray travel costs for research trips or trips for conferences relating to Europe, Eurasia, or Russia.
keggi-berzins fellowships for baltic studies
The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale invite applications for the Keggi-Berzins Fellowships for Baltic Studies. Prizes of up to $1,500 will be awarded to current Yale undergraduates and graduate students for research or language study in or about a Baltic country in the summer. Projects may be conducted in the USA or Europe.
foreign language and area studies fellowships
The goal of the FLAS fellowships is to enhance the international expertise of U.S. nationals. Academic year FLAS fellowships are for Yale undergraduate, graduate and professional school students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, whose academic programs include the study of a foreign language designated as priority by the U.S. Department of Education and whose career plans include teaching, public service or business. International Graduate Student Exchange Agreements
The Graduate School has established and continues to develop formal exchanges (link is external)with a number of institutions internationally in cases where there are reciprocal academic benefits for faculty and graduate students. Yale doctoral students may participate in any international exchanges listed below. Most of them last one term or a full academic year, and a small number of exchanges are available for summers only. Doctoral students should consult with their faculty adviser and Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) about their academic progress and funding before submitting the application. The Council on Middle East Studies invites applications to the Libby Rouse Fund for Peace Fellowship competition from undergraduate students whose work focuses on the countries of Middle East or Central Asia.

David L. Boren Scholarships
The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to US undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
Critical Language Scholarships
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers US undergraduate and graduate students fully-funded intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical foreign languages, including Russian and Azerbaijani.
